The Coral Identification Capacity Building Program is pleased to announce the release of the 2nd edition of the Coral Finder Toolkit – now available in English and Bahasa Indonesia. This release is an important landmark for our organisation which has come a long way since we launched our dream of practical, easy-to-grasp tools for coral iD.

It started in 2009 with the Coral Finder –  a visually driven coral ID system that anyone can use and which can be taken underwater! Apart from taking coral ID to the underwater coal face the Coral Finder had another killer feature – it cross referenced back to the Charlie Veron’s classic reference – Corals of the World.

Subsequently we released the Coral Finder Toolkit –  a suite of FREE resources to support the Coral Finder on its mission to take coral ID to the world. In 2011 the 2nd edition of the Coral Finder was released building on what we had learned from training people in dozens of field and laboratory workshops. It include over 300 new images and dozens of tweaks aimed at getting results in the real world.

Additions to the Coral Finder Toolkit Family

We now have certified CICBP trainers actively working in the west Pacific and Indonesia with fabulously successful workshops completed in 7 Australian cities, Indonesia, Malaysia, American Samoa, Solomon Islands and Fiji.

Bringing these toolkit resources into another language (Bahasa Indonesia) was an exciting project made possible thanks to the unstinting support of Rizya Ardiwijaya (TNC) and Beginer Subhan (Bogor University). Almost a year in development Coral Finder Toolkit 2.0 was tested in field workshops in Australia and Bali. “Kicking the tyres in the field in two languages was an important part of the process”, said Russell Kelley CICBP Program Director. “The workshop results for our Indonesian colleagues matched our own trials in Australia – so we’re ecstatic with the end result!”
