Distribution

Found in the Indo-Pacific

ID Tips

Ctenactis form solitary, free-living, elongate discs up to 30cm in length.  The discs are domed in the centre, where a thin slit-like furrow containing a number of mouths may be seen.  They are found across all reef zones.

The septa have large saw-like teeth that are regularly spaced and sized.  The arrangement of septa running down the upper surface, and costae running along the lower surface are characteristic of the Fungiidae.  Check out the Fungiidae training video for more information.

The Coral Finder lists Ctenactis in one key group with Fungia being a candidate for confusion.

Similar genera to Ctenactis (Coral Finder p24)

Ctenactis can be confused with Fungia, but may be separated by the long axial furrow containing one or more mouths, and the saw-like septal teeth characteristic of Ctenactis. Fungia have shorter axial furrows that contain only one mouth, and the juveniles are attached.
